diorama

16.12.05 Utrecht(NL) - ekko

On Friday the 16th of December it was time for another Cyberia in the Ekko, Utrecht, the Netherlands. This edition featured a concert of the German band Diorama who came to promote their new remix album and were supported by The Promise.

We arrived around 20:15 in an almost empty Ekko. The Promise was scheduled to start at 20:30 but they decided to wait a little longer hoping that more people would show up. When they finally started around 21:00 Ekko was still only half filled. I didn’t know The Promise before this evening and was curious to find out what kind of music they make. To my disappointment I found out that they were just another electro band. They lack a sound of their own, and they try to hold on to what an electro band should do on stage. When The Promise found out that the audience was only there to see Diorama and was unwilling to go along with the band, their behavior on stage changed. They started to act childish by flirting with each other, squeezing each others butt and having fun of their own. They didn’t put on a surprising show, besides the female dancer that came on stage during their version of Kraftwerk’s Das Model. To me The Promise is a band that can’t live up to their name.

Finally it was time for Diorama to enter the stage. In the meantime Ekko filled up nicely and the people were anxious to see the band they all came for. From the start to the end of the concert could only be described as amazing. You could see that they and the audience were enjoying themselves. Diorama gave all they had to please the crowd even more. All the songs were heavily altered by the addition of a guitar and some changes in the lyrics and the keyboard strings. In the slow parts of some songs the guitar sounded a lot like the familiar Pink Floyd guitar “solo’s”. During this show they played all the familiar songs like Liquid Arms, Light and Wingless, all put in a new jacket.

Unfortunately the Ekko holds a curfew and all live music must end at 23.00. This curfew combined with the late start of The Promise was the reason that Diorama couldn’t complete the show they had planned. This to the grief of both band and audience. After a few minutes of yelling “boo!” and “we want more” the Ekko decided to let Diorama play one more song.
Like I stated before, this show was amazing. Diorama is a great live band that knows how to put on a great show. Normally an album sounds even better then a live show, but even if the album sounded just like the live show it is a must have!
