02.04.05 - Zaandam - De Kade - with VNV Nation & Soman

VNV Nation is back in the Netherlands: a good reason to spend a saturday night at 'de Kade' in Zaandam for many people. When Soman came on stage, just before 10, it wasn't too crowded yet, although Soman plays quite interesting music; unfortunately there isn't a real stage performance, which seems to be inherent to the rhythmic industrial genre, although Soman's music also contains some trance influences, which results in a very danceable hybrid.

When the gig of Diorama started, it was remarkably more crowded; this band has obviously built up a decent fan base in the Netherlands. Diorama played a solid, danceable set and the band was sympathetic and convincing, despite of Torben's lack of charisma.

Especially the community singing and the input of the guitar made this show worthwhile, with the heavy new song "The Girls" being very promising for the new album "Amaroid". Sadly, this show was over too soon; let's hope that Diorama will be back as a headliner.

Thereafter VNV Nation came on stage for a successful best-of set. Frontman Ronan knows how to entertain the audience and the enthusiasm of Mark Jackson works the crowd up as well. Next to that the band brought up two synthesizer players, but they didn't really do much for the show. VNV Nation opened very well with the new single "Chrome", whereafter the audience could hit the dancefloor with hits like "Darkangel", "Epicentre", "Honour 2003" and the impressing new song "Perpetual". Between the highlights, Ronan unfortunately dropped the pace by seemingly endless babble that

no one wanted to hear and the band felt the need to play a few slower songs in the middle of the set, among others the new ballad "Endless Skies". Next to that the concert was held up by some idiots who found it necessary to start a fight, but Ronan anticipated very well by calling the security. After this VNV Nation could continue with the beautiful "Beloved", "Kingdom" with some really crappy vocals and, last but not least, "Electronaut" with Ronan and Mark behind the synthesizers. All in all a successful gig of a band that knows its qualities and knows what the audience wants.

After the shows, many people stayed for the "The Grave" afterparty, which was really nice with the DJ's spinning lovely music until 5 in the morning. This evening was really worthwhile!
